While running SAS Enterprise Miner 5.x, you might attempt to access a diagram and find it is locked. While SAS Enterprise Miner locks diagrams only when they are currently in use, a previous session might have terminated without releasing the lock and you will need to manually break the lock.
To break the lock, follow these steps.
Determine the project path
Start SAS Enterprise Miner and open the project that contains the locked diagram.
In the SAS Enterprise Miner project, select the project name in the Project Panel. The property sheet will show the value for Path. This is the location of the project on the server. Note this path.
Determine the diagram ID
In the SAS Enterprise Miner project, select the diagram name in the Project Panel. The property sheet will show the ID for this diagram. It will be EMWS, EMWS2, or something similar. Note this value.
Exit SAS Enterprise Miner
Delete lock and status files
From a shell window for the server machine, open the directory that is specified in the Project Path property. From there, open the directories: workspaces ► EMWS[n] ► System. This system directory contains the indicator files for the status of the diagram.
Open any file that has a PID extension (these are plain text files). These files contain the process ID for a SAS session. Because you have closed the diagram and the project, none of these SAS processes should be running. Check the process ID from each of the PID files with the processes that are running on the SAS Workspace Server. If the process ID exists and the process is a SAS process, then you might want to consider this an orphaned process and kill it. Some sites might choose to not delete the process and let their system administrators clean up orphaned processes.
Delete all the following files that exist in the system directory:
wsopen.lck - Indicates that the diagram is open by another user, and triggers the message:
The diagram is considered locked by the SAS
server. This is either due to another process
currently running this diagram, or due to the
failure to release this lock during a previous
session. Would you like to break this lock and
continue using this diagram?"
If working in a shared environment (SAS Enterprise Miner 5.2 connected via the SAS Analytics Platform server), then the message is:
Locked Resource. Diagram is locked by <userid>.
wsrun.lck - Indicates that the diagram is still running. The Windows cursor will display as an hourglass when this file is present. In SAS Enterprise Miner 5.2, clicking a node will generate the message:
Server Error. Workspace is running.
isalive.st - Contains a date/time stamp.
[node id].pid - Contains the process ID for the SAS session that is processing a node in the diagram.
[node id]_updating.st - Triggers colored border around the node.
[node id]_running.st - Triggers colored border around the node.
traverser.pid - Contains the process ID for the SAS session that is running the traverser.
Restart the SAS Analytics Platform Server
If you started SAS Enterprise Miner with "Personal Workstation" unselected, then there are additional in-memory locks that are held by the SAS Analytics Platform server (SAS Enteprise Miner 5.2 and 5.3only). The SAS Analytics Platform server should recognize the orphaned process and release the project after about 10 minutes. If the project isn't unlocked after that time, then restarting the SAS Analytics Platform server will flush the in-memory locks.
Open your SAS Enterprise Miner project and confirm that you can open the diagram. Indicators that the diagram is locked and/or running should now be gone.
As a circumvention to breaking a lock, you can bypass the diagram lock by changing the diagram ID. Use this as a circumvention only if you cannot perform the preceding steps and only if your diagram does not contain a SAS® Text Miner node.
Open the Workspaces directory immediately under the SAS Enterprise Miner project directory.
Open the file "workspaces.txt" and edit the value by incrementing the number by 1. For example, if workspaces.txt contains "EMWS2", then edit the value so it reads "EMWS3". Save and close this file.
Determine the ID property value for the locked diagram. Do this by opening the SAS Enterprise Miner project and selecting the diagram in the Project Panel. The Property Panel will display the ID as a value such as EMWS[n], where n is either nothing or an integer. For example, the id may read "EMWS2".
Rename the EMWS[n] directory in the Workspaces directory so that it matches the new value in the workspaces.txt file. For example, rename the directory EMWS2 to EMWS3.
Open the file "wsmeta.txt" from within the EMWS[n] directory you just renamed. Edit line two so that the string that follows #!NAME% matches the EMWS[n] value in the workspaces.txt file. Save and close the wsmeta.txt file.
